Botanical Boyne Valley – Garden Weekend
Time and a temperate climate have been kind to the Boyne Valley. Lush pastures, fertile farmland and plains bordered by the river have evolved making it ideal for growing many varieties of crops, flowers, shrubs and plants. Many of the historic family houses in the Boyne Valley have relied upon its garden for survival and through the loving attention of present owners a few of these special places have survived.
Saturday 31st July
From 10am to 12pm the Irish Specialist Nursery Growers Association will be present at Tankardstown House, Slane to compliment the bustling Tankardstown House farmers market where farmhouse cheeses, artisan breads, organic meats and craft products adorn the stalls. Advice on rare plants is on offer along with specimen plants for sale. Visitors are welcome to amble through the 80 acres of parkland at Tankardstown which includes a lime tree avenue and walled garden.
Return to Drogheda in the afternoon to Listoke Gardens: Although Listoke House is long gone the 6 acre Edwardian garden has been revived through a labour of love by Patricia and Patrick Barrow. A garden of contrasts; a traditional tennis court to a wild garden, a woodland walk to a kitchen garden. Herbaceous borders, shrubbery path and summer house and arboretum all add to this condensed and colourful spectacle. Take a little part of Listoke with you as plants and seeds harvested from the gardens are available for sale.
Sunday 1st August
From 9.00am to 1.00pm on Sunday enjoy guided tours at Killineer House, Drogheda. Home to Charles and Eithne Carroll the house and gardens were completed together in the late 1830's and survive largely unchanged to the present day. The 17 acres of gardens include formal terraces, an ornamental lake surrounded by woodland walks with an extensive collection of damp-loving plants. The 1.5 acre walled garden is stocked with herbaceous borders, vegetable plots and greenhouses brimming with peaches, nectarines and apricots. In the centre of a working farm, with extensive bird and other wildlife, this garden also has an elaborate regency summerhouse as well as an extensive laurel lawn, an unusual Victorian feature and the largest surviving in the country.
Complete the experience with a visit to Beaulieu House, Garden & Car Museum, Drogheda. This garden dates back furthest to the 1600’s and both the house and the garden have survived the test of time very well. Beaulieu’s terraced gardens simply embellish the view of the Boyne estuary from the raised area. The walled garden is a strong feature here with an abundance of fruit and vegetables in season. This is just one of the many varied elements of gardening which create the overall enjoyable effect. The Dutch design of Beaulieu House is unique (to Ireland), imposing a magical effect on the visitor providing a lasting memory. Gabriel (10th generation of same family at Beaulieu) was a well known racing driver in Ireland in late 60’s/early 70’s ranking her in the top Irish lady drivers. Her collection of historic classic racing and rally saloons create an interesting diversion whilst there. Guided tour of the House, entry to Walled Garden and Museum open between 2pm and 5pm
